Hopefully you have read that book as well as the rest of the Chronicles of Prydain series. Still my favorite after all these years. ![]()

So my work just got bought out, literally last Friday. Today - the next working day, after the ever-so-ironic-in-this-case Labor Day, honoring America's workers - they brought in a 'consultant', who visited every department to make recommendations as to what machines and people the (new) company needs to meet its goals. In other words, they brought in one of the Bobs from Office Space, and they made zero effort to hide the fact that he was there to cut jobs.
Then, tonight, my boss asked me whether, if Joseph (the only other person who does my job, he on days and me on evenings) was suddenly not there, would I be able to do all of the maintenance and stuff. I said yes, of course, but asked why. She said, "I've been told to ask, so I'm asking". Clearly, her boss told her she would have to choose between me and him, and she's debating. So, tomorrow, or the next day, or next week, I could go in and find out that one (or for all I know, both) of us have been laid off. I've discovered, upon searching the ol' soul for a bit, that I would rather have my job. I have grown quite fond of the income and the health insurance. However, if I do indeed get laid off, it would not be the end of the world. I'd get a roommate, maybe two, would hit the doctor and dentist ASAP, and I'd relax in the evenings and concentrate on my school. It would be expensive, but not cataclysmic. Here's the kicker: I'm in a win-win situation, when I think about it, because if I get laid off, it's because I can't work days due to school. I am actually the preferred one for quality of work purposes, which makes me feel good. If Joseph gets laid off, it's because he's a screw-up. That makes me smile. So I guess what I'm saying is that this is entirely the wrong thread. |

That right there should tell you which way they're leaning if they have to choose between the two of you. In my personal experience, you never ask the person you're going to let go if they can handle the workload of both workers that's just a bad Human Resources move. You would ask the one you're keeping so that it's not a shock to them when they come into work and find out that they now have a heavier workload at the same pay rate....Again, I don't really know the situation, but just from experience it sounds like they'd be leaning towards you if they were to keep one...Hope everything works out for you Aries.
